Fire Hydrant Flushing - Speedway Water Works

Speedway Water Works Fire Hydrant Flushing

Annually, the Water Works Department in Speedway flushes the distribution system as part of the distribution system maintenance program. Typically, the entire distribution system flush takes place in late April each year. Flushing specific areas of the system may also take place throughout the year to improve water quality as needed.

Here are some questions frequently asked during this time:

What is the benefit of flushing?

  • Flushing hydrants increases the rate of flow of the water through the mains, scouring any accumulated sediment in the main, in particular at the dead ends of the system.
  • Flushing also provides Water Works the opportunity to find problems with operation of the hydrant to prevent issues during the case of an emergency.

Why is my water cloudy?

Even though we flush until the water is clear, there may be some discolored or cloudy water at the tap for a short period. For this reason, we flush after 9pm to allow the water to settle overnight.

What do I do if my water runs cloudy or discolored the next morning?

If there is some discolored water in the morning, allowing a tap to run for a few minutes should clear up the issue.

We thank you for your patience as we complete the fire hydrant flushing this year. Speedway Police dispatch will be notified, as well as, any major water users in the areas of the flushing each night. During this timeframe, you may see Water Works personnel at night around town. They will be working in trucks with emergency lighting and each employee will be wearing high visibility safety vests. Please be cautious driving during this time to ensure the safety of our crews.
