2021 Indianapolis 500 Traffic Restrictions Press Release

The Speedway Police Department would like to remind ALL Speedway residents to be aware of the traffic patterns that are established just prior to the end of the Indianapolis 500 which will be held on Sunday, May 30, 2021. The traffic restrictions take effect at lap 180 of the race. This of course does not include the possibility of the race being called to an early end due to weather concerns.

Generally, at lap 180 Speedway and surrounding area roadways are restricted to facilitate maximum movement of vehicular traffic out of Speedway. It is recommended that Speedway residents prepare for this traffic outflow with regard to their personal business and travel to and from the Town of Speedway. Once the roadways fill with exiting traffic, it will be extremely difficult to get in and out of the Town until the traffic has left the area. This process typically takes three to four hours to complete. While this poses a degree of inconvenience to some people, moving this highly unique amount of traffic out of the Town in this amount of time is quite an accomplishment.

The Speedway Police Department and our Public Safety partners work very hard to ensure that the temporary traffic restrictions are managed in the most efficient way possible.  The Speedway Police Department appreciates the patience and consideration from all Town residents and business owners during this time.
