History

Thomas Love photoThe Town of Speedway, Indiana was created in 1926 and immediately appointed its first Town Marshal, Thomas Love.

The town was created 17 years after the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which was built in 1909 after a group of four men purchased land on the west side of Indianapolis to build the track.

Eventually one of the original owners decided that there should be an attractive residential area to compliment the industrial areas being built around the track. The police department ran under the direction of a town marshal system until 1968 when it became a Metropolitan Police Department.
