COMMUNITY: Properly disposing of fats, grease, and oils

A MESSAGE FROM SPEEDWAY PUBLIC WORKS
Our homes and businesses are connected to public sewage treatment facilities by the Town's sewer system. When fats, grease, and oils are poured or flushed down sinks, drains, or toilets, they can cool and harden into grease clogs. When poured or flushed, this also makes the grease and oil stick to the walls of our sewer pipes, creating blockages that can plug up the lines.

How should fats, grease, and oils be disposed?
Container Method:
Pour the cooled liquid into a disposable container, seal shut, and throw away the container.

Freezer Method:
Pour leftover oil into an old can and place it in the freezer until it hardens. Once firm, scoop out and into the trash with a spoon.

Plastic Bag Method:
Toss cooled oil into a plastic trash bag, provided the trash bag already contains debris such as paper towels, veggie peels and more that can soak up some of the grease.

Note: Do NOT attempt to toss oil while it’s still hot—this can be dangerous!
