Zoning

Should you choose to change the footprint of your home or business, a zoning change will be needed. resulting in the requirement of a "Development Standard Variance" and/or a "Variance of Use".

The Town of Speedway works in coordination with the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development on such variances. Questions about a variance or about proposed construction should be directed to the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development at (317) 327-8700.

The Town of Speedway is located within Marion County and is therefore governed by Marion County zoning ordinances. Should you call the Town of Speedway with questions, we are required to refer you to the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development.

When you contact the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development regarding a potential zoning change, you will explain your project plans and they will then inform you if you need a zoning variance.

Should the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development deem necessary that you obtain a variance (a departure from the provisions of a zoning ordinance) you will then visit the Speedway Municipal Center at 5300 Crawfordsville Road, Speedway to obtain the necessary Board of Zoning Appeals forms. These forms must be completed by the owner of the parcel or a duly appointed agent or representative; for instance, your contractor, or an attorney.

Upon returning the correctly completed forms, along with all required supporting documentation and paying any associated fees, a docket number and hearing date will be assigned. The hearing date will be a minimum of 40 days after the date of filing as the Speedway Board of Zoning Appeals meets on the first Wednesday of the month.
