COMMUNITY: Short-Term Rental Ordinance Proposed

The Town of Speedway has experienced an influx of residential properties being utilized as short-term rentals within the town boundaries.

With a goal of better managing these short-term rentals and how they affect our community, Town of Speedway leadership presented a first reading of a Short-Term Rental Ordinance to Town Council at the November 15, 2022, Town Council public meeting.

The proposed Short-Term Rental Ordinance will govern owner-occupied and non-owner occupied short-term rental properties, including but not limited to VRBO and AIRBNB situations.

The purpose of the proposed ordinance focuses on protecting the public health, safety, and general welfare of the town by implementing a licensing, registration, and regulation process of all short-term rentals. This ordinance would also rely on maximum occupancy criteria, which will be established in a future ordinance, as well as ensure the compatibility between short-term rentals and the residential character of the other homes in the surrounding neighborhood.

A second reading of the proposed ordinance will take place at the December 12, 2022, Town Council public meeting. If approved, the Short-Term Rental Ordinance will become effective, January 1, 2023.
