Speedway Animal Rescue and Speedway Street Department Working Together

Success stories and more

Speedway Animal Rescue (SAR) and the Speedway Street Department work together daily to keep our pets safe.

Following is a snap shot of the work done January - March, 2023:

  • 22 animals are currently in the care of SAR [10 came from the street department]
  • 34 adoptions this year [12 animals came from the street department]
  • Over $22,000 has been spent on vetting in only 3 months

SAR is exceeding all metrics from previous years, including adoptions, donations, spending, and intakes. SAR had 110 animals in their care in 2022 and have already had 56 animals in care in 2023.So why do they continue this work?

Because of stories such as these:

Walter

Walter the beagle
Walter was surrendered to Speedway Animal Rescue by his owner, who threatened to shoot Walter if we didn't take him immediately. The Speedway Street Department allowed us to meet in their parking lot, and also called the police to make sure we were able to safely get Walter into our care. Poor Walter is a senior dog and was underweight and had an old injury.

Walter was recently adopted by two Nebraska police officers who happened to be in Indianapolis for a Pacers/76ers game. On a whim, they looked at local animal rescues, saw Walter, and fell in love. They drove through the night to adopt him.

Freya, Lucy, and family

All 9 dogs that were part of a recent backyard breeding situation have been adopted. A special thanks to Speedway Street Commissioner, Rob Wetnight, for helping with this critical rescue - four of the pups had to be hospitalized from hypothermia. Lucy, the one pictured above, found her forever home in Ohio. Lucy's mom, Freya, was adopted by a man in Peru, IN who also volunteered to transport Lucy to her forever home in Ohio.

Guinness

Guinness the poodle
Guinness recently flew to Maine on a rescue flight to his new adopter, thanks to a free flight provided by Delta Airlines. Guinness is a poodle who came to SAR as a stray. His new adopter has two other dogs that previously came from the Speedway Street Department, who also were granted rescue flights in 2021.

Exactly how does SAR and the Town of Speedway work together?

In Speedway, animal control works like this: stray/lost animals found within town limits are transported to the Speedway Street Department, where they are held for 4 business days. Dogs and cats can be reclaimed here with proof of ownership and payment of fines. If no owner comes forward after 4 days, animals are turned over to Speedway Animal Rescue.

While in the care of the Speedway Street Department, blankets are available for comfort. Heat is provided in the winter, and the holding area is air-conditioned in the summer. Hygiene is taken very seriously, and Speedway Animal Rescue has approved these hygiene protocols. Speedway Animal Rescue provides supplies such as food, leashes, crates, and anything they need.

Again, many thanks to both the Speedway Street Department and Speedway Animal Rescue for working together to keep our pets safe!
