Town of Speedway Forms Golf Cart Ordinance Exploratory Committee

The Town of Speedway is currently considering a possible ordinance related to the use of golf carts in Speedway.

The Speedway Town Council has authorized the formation of a Golf Cart Ordinance Exploratory Committee. This committee will meet to discuss thoughts on allowing golf carts in Speedway and provide suggestions and recommendations to be shared with Town Council. We are seeking 3-5 members who would be available for a series of 2 or 3 meetings held in the late afternoon to review and discuss this proposed ordinance.

Any considered ordinance will outline required vehicle equipment, persons permitted to operate a golf cart, enforced speed limits, roads allowing golf cart operation, determined permit fees, and any related restrictions.

The Town will exercise due diligence as we address considerations such as registration requirements with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, required signage on streets, as well as seeking permission from the City of Indianapolis as many of our streets throughout town are owned by the City of Indianapolis.

“Many towns and communities allow their citizens to use golf carts to get around their neighborhoods,” said Council President Jason DeLisle. “Allowing for such movement in our town may benefit Speedway – it’s certainly worth the consideration. We believe this consideration process should include resident ownership in the form of an exploratory committee.”

No timeline or anticipated date of approval has been established as the Town is currently in the exploratory phase of this considered ordinance. To help understand the community’s interest in the use of golf carts in Speedway, a survey will be made available at a later date.
