Town of Speedway Redevelopment Commission Announces 16th and Main Street Roundabout Improvement and Beautification Project
SPEEDWAY, IN – The Speedway Redevelopment Commission (SRC) is pleased to announce the commencement of a significant improvement and beautification project at the roundabout located at 16th and Main Street. This initiative is part of the Town of Speedway’s continued investment in placemaking and enhancing the gateway presence for the Town of Speedway.
In January 2025, the SRC approved a professional services contract with Rundle Ernstberger Associates (REA) to complete design and construction documents for the project. Since then, the SRC and REA have collaborated on conceptual design work and detailed plans that not only reflect the vision for a striking and meaningful gateway but also incorporate critical elements of safety for both pedestrians and vehicles. The design emphasizes safe navigation, visibility, and accessibility, ensuring the roundabout remains a functional and welcoming space for all who travel through it.
As part of the design, a series of custom-crafted perforated metal panels will depict the rich history of racing, paying tribute to the legacy that has defined this sport – additionally, the beloved lyrics of “Back Home Again in Indiana” will be subtly integrated into the design, offering a heartfelt tribute to Indiana’s enduring spirit. The panels and lyrics will be thoughtfully backlit, creating a striking focal point at night and enhancing the visual appeal. The structure’s perimeter will be constructed from authentic Indiana limestone, providing a foundation that is not only strong and durable but also visually cohesive with the region’s architectural heritage. The entire installation will be complemented by carefully selected landscaping, and a purposeful sightline to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Gate 1 will be integrated, reinforcing the roundabout’s connection to its iconic surroundings. For safety reasons, the design will not function as a pedestrian cut-through or destination space, but rather as a visual landmark that honors tradition while enhancing the roundabout.
The $2.1 million project will be partially funded through a significant bequest from the Al Unser Sr. Trust. To recognize this generous contribution, the Town of Speedway will host a public ceremony on May 19, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the Seeds of Light structure located directly across from the 16th and Main Street roundabout. This special event will honor Al Unser Sr. — affectionately known to fans as "Big Al" — and celebrate his remarkable legacy in the world of racing, as well as his enduring impact on the identity and spirit of the Town of Speedway.
Al Unser Sr. drove with passion and upheld the highest standards of professionalism both on and off the track. His deep connection to the racing community that supported him throughout his career was especially evident in the town he enjoyed so much. “Speedway, Indiana was where Al loved to be especially during the month of May,” said Susan Unser, wife of the late Al Unser Sr. “While he loved the racing, it was the race fans he enjoyed the most. This opportunity to have a piece of the Town of Speedway, the entrance to the racing Capital of the World, named the Al Unser Sr. Roundabout, is such an honor. Al would want to thank all the race fans who cheered him on and will keep his spirit alive for generations.”
Construction is expected to begin in June 2025, with project completion targeted for April 2026.
“This beautiful placemaking project will center on our community’s assets, inspirations, and history,” said SRC President Jennifer Miller. “This project serves as the bookend to the recently completed gateway sign on Crawfordsville Rd, helping to welcome residents, visitors, and fans alike while also enhancing the overall safety of the roundabout.”
The SRC, in partnership with the Town of Speedway, will continue pursuing additional funding opportunities to support the completion of the project. Efforts are also underway to secure further donations to help offset the Town’s share of the project cost. In recognition of this community-driven effort, the Town is actively exploring meaningful ways to honor and acknowledge those who contribute to this transformative initiative.
