Speedway Water Works Cross-Connection Program
The Town of Speedway has a Cross-Connection Ordinance and is currently implementing a Cross-Connection Program to protect our water supply. All businesses will be receiving notification letters. It is important that replies to these notification letters are received in a timely manner. Residential water customers will not receive notification letters and do not need to take any action at this time.

What is a Cross-Connection?
A cross-connection is any actual or potential connection between the public water supply and a source of contamination or pollution. Cross-connections are present at many points throughout a water distribution system.
Problems with Cross-Connections.
Cross-connections are susceptible to backflows, which are the flow of liquids and/or materials the wrong way into a building’s plumbing or into the distribution pipes of the water system. Backflows from cross-connections have the potential to negatively impact water quality. While the Town does not currently have any known problems with backflows, the Cross-Connection Program is being implemented to prevent any future problems.

Cross-Connection Programs are critical to ensure the safety of drinking water provided to communities.
Speedway’s crossconnection program includes:
- Adoption of a Cross-Connection Ordinance
- Compliance with state regulations and plumbing and building codes
- Public education • Installation, testing, and inspection of backflow prevention devices
- Annual certification of backflow prevention devices
